its my brother in law, i think a gift card is pretty lame

They block out noise,  amazingly.  Got them once in AA F, made a huge difference in my trip. Even if you're not listening to anything

Bose has passive noise isolation and active noise cancellation.

"Passive" just means that it covers the ears to block out the noise. If you put your hands over your ears, you hands are passively noise cancelling.

Indeed. Though you would look pretty weird like that and I have yet to hear any music come from my hands that way.
