Square Trade or Apple Care for MacBook Pro?
« on: July 07, 2016, 05:10:07 PM »
Just purchased a new MacBook Pro for my child who starts college in fall. Purchased from BB using AMEX, so we have an extra year of warranty. Debating between squaretrade (ST) and Apple Care (AC). Advantage of ST is that it includes spill/drop protection. This is what I am worried about since she might accidentally drop something on the Mac. She has been careful with her stuff, but one never knows. With AC, one can just take Mac to apple store, and they will take care of it (just not the drop/spill part  >:().

My understanding is that with either of these 2 isurances, AMEX insurance will kick in after these extended warranties run out, so basically, Mac will be covered for 4-years.

Any suggestions/advice?

Also, anyone has 30% or more discount codes for ST?

Thanks.

I have no personal experience with Amex kicking in after extending warranty, but one of my friends told me this. I have no reason to believe that he lied to me.

Another question: Does anyone know how does home insurance cover MacBook? Is it worth it?

AppleCare on MacBooks does not cover drops or accidents
I will not respond to PM about the UPS method.

I will not respond to PM about the BBLD method.

Yeah, I know. Wish they did though, that would make the decision so much easier :)

Personally I wouldn't get either. I think it's worth the small risk of something happening and not being covered than paying 25% for a the chance that something might happen.

These days insurance is sold on everything, but I think it's only useful when you cannot handle the loss. It's like buying cell phone insurance which ends up costing more for most people.

Unless the person I reckless in which case it may be advisable. I have my Mac book air for 3 years now, no Apple care and it's working fine.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I wanted to chime in nonetheless.

Thanks for your feedback. I agree that MacBooks are generally very good, I have one from 2008, and still works very well. I am still debating what to do as it is for my kid.
