Though there's a major difference. A Rubik's cube actually requires use of one's brain, senses etc. which is why it has endured (in waves) since the 1980s (IINM). Fidget spinners... well those are just a bunch of ball-bearings, of better or worse quality. Will always attract some fascination, but no real purpose (unless some geek will figure out some useful purpose). The last renaissance ball bearings had was with in-line skates IIRC (and probably followed by Razor scooters).

Fidgets also have (perceived) practical use, to help keep people focused or entertained.
They also come in different shapes, sizes, styles, features, quality, which leads it to being a fun item to collect.

Depends on the person and type of spinner.

Skateboarding goes in and out as hobby. Was pretty popular a few years ago.
Real yoyos have bearings. The rest are cheap junk that don't even spin.

Whether or not spinners help people stay focused or release anxiety doesn't really matter, because people believe it helps.
So unless studies come out convincing people otherwise, they will continue to use them for that purpose.
