What do you use to polish silver candlesticks?
« on: November 25, 2011, 02:57:38 PM »
My wife has nice silver candlesticks for shabbos (as do most of us). Do you need to use a special cloth to polish them? Does using a silver polish help them stay clean longer?

Any other tricks?

Thanks!

I have a glove that had polish in it. Very quick and easy to do and works like a charm

Exposure to the air causes it to tarnish? if you'd like it stay clean longer put them in a bag, preferably airtight when not in use. And of course use polish (there are other ways, some better than others but polish is the best for the silver). Also note that if silver sits for a while while tarnished it causes permanent damage (its actually a Gemara! that it is considered a shinuy by geneiva since it is permanent).

I do it the old fashioned way . With a sock (used like a glove) maybe its time for an upgrade. Where do they sell those.

Actually in middle of polishing silver now. Needed a break. :)

I also have those gloves they have polish on them. But they only help if used right away, once it gets serious tarnish you'll need to apply polish.

I find to Goddards to be the best.

Use the mitts after the polish for a beautiful shine.

Their jewelry polish is also really good.

In general, we got a silver polish cloth, I think without any polish, and it seemed to work fine with a drop of elbow grease. I'm just wondering if i can use any standard materials (i.e., cotton, gauze, or perhaps something else) Instead of a specialty item - as far as the cloth itself. Can I use an old understhirt, or will that scratch it? How about paper towels? Cotton balls?

what about diamond cut?

?? What's that?

I do it the old fashioned way . With a sock (used like a glove).

Then you just wash the sock, and can wear it again, or it's a one-time thing before you throw the sock out?

I have a glove that had polish in it. Very quick and easy to do and works like a charm

How many uses do those gloves have?

You can also put them in a sealed/airtight breakfront (or wherever you store them) with silica gel.

Lacquering cannot be done on everything. I have the gloves along with a spray can. Every once in a while the wife throws them into the wash and I need to re-spray them.

Do you wash them with other stuff, or would the tarnish stain things?

So you wash the lacquered candlesticks with soap-water?

wrap and unwrap every week?

I hope you didn't mean used them while they're wrapped in saran...

I think he was talking about washing the gloves - that's what I was responding to, anyway...

What type of cloth do you guys use?
