It happened about 2 months ago. The FR was about a week or two after ordering the coins.

I got a new AMEX Starwood card and made a bunch of purchases, not even getting close to my credit limit. Three days ago the US Mint authorized a transaction for $3,000 worth of coins (my first order ever). Today I got a call for a financial review from AMEX. I know the coins are what triggered it.

Has anyone ever tried taking $1,000 worth of coins to Walmart and getting a money order with them? Please share your experiences.

Called the US Mint today. The 10 day rule applies to the last date of purchase, not date of shipping or charge to your cc.

Why wouldn't that work?

You can't buy a money order with a credit card.

The point of the US Mint program is to get the coins into circulation. I know that Walmart does money orders for 60 cents. I wanted to take $1,000 of coins to Walmart and get a money order. Then I can deposit the money order in my bank and pay my cc. That way I am complying with the program and not direct depostiting the coins. Besides, if I went to several stores to get m.o. then maybe I wouldn't get the hassle with the bank or strange looks.

I have never bought coins before and am just afraid of the strange responses I will get, whether it is from Walmart or bank tellers.

What's there to be afraid of? Dan said he took the coins to Chase bank and they didn't have any problem with it whatsoever.
and besides, who cares what people's reactions are? we're on a mission: get the most miles you can, don't let such things get in the way...

It happened about 2 months ago. The FR was about a week or two after ordering the coins.

About a year ago I purchased 10k from the mint on my Amex in one shot. I called Amex and let them know there was a large purchase coming through. They said fine, didn't even bother asking details like the dollar amount or from whom - like chase and others do - and it all went through smooth. This was about a year or so after I got FR'd, so could be they knew my story and didnt think I was risky.

By the way, my FR came just after I applied for the Starwood Biz for the second (and last) time. I've seen others saying the same happened with them.

I got a notice from Chase some time ago that they will be charging for depositing coins by the bag. Anyone else get this?

It's only money laundering if you have dirty money.
There's nothing illegal about it, and if you're asked just tell the truth like I did.

Wikipedia defines money laundering as:

'the practice of engaging in financial transactions to conceal the identity, source, or destination of illegally gained money.'

Usually people who refer to things like this as $ laundering have no idea what they are talking about!

Mint Questions
« Reply #156 on: June 24, 2010, 08:37:37 AM »
I thought I saw this disscussed, but I've searched and can't find it. Two questions.

1. Dan (or anyone else from Cleveland), which banks are not giving you  any problems depositing the coins?

2. Is there a B&M bank in which I can pay my *W. (And just dump the coins on them)

I doubt anyone would post on the forums which banks are accepting coins because very quickly they no longer will.
If you want to have any chance try PMing someone. No guarantees they'll answer, but worth a try.

dan posted way back that chase had no issue whatsoever.

there's also TD bank which has a coin machine. u just put all the coims thru, go to the teller and they give u cash or u can deposit it. they don't take any percentage and its free even if u don't have an account with them (although they'll try to convince u to get one).
they have great hours, they r open very late, and they r open on sundays.
