Kosher Food Options
Contact Chabad Parana for updated information regarding any Kosher food there. Otherwise plenty of snacks and fruits.

Hotels with Points
None.

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - They are metered from FLN to where you are going. We stayed in Barra Lagoa and it was R$55.
Executive Bus - Yellow buses go between major destinations to the airport and bus terminal - R$6.
Public Bus - Not from the airport. But from the bus station it's tricky but doable - R$3.

Major Activities
Water-sports and relaxing. During peak-season (Dec-Jan) there is plenty to do, such as scuba diving, gliding, boat tours and more. We were there during winter break (Jul) and the waves were great for surfing, and the dunes at Joaquina were great for sandboarding.

There are beautiful beaches all over the island of Florianopolis. During the winter the north beaches tend to be the warmest as the wind doesn't attack it directly. Center/east beaches are really nice, the best for surfing, but can get cold. Mole and Joaquina are the most popular from those. Didn't trek down south on my trip there, but the beaches are supposedly great as well, though very calm and sleepy kind of towns next to them and people going fishing there.

A small town on the west side of the island, has a boardwalk and bicycle path along the water, nice place to go for sunset. Old historic architecture there, many buildings there hundreds of years old. It's about 10-15 minutes north of downtown FLN.

I don't think you can buy shabbos meals in Rio.  Contact a shliach, like in Leblon, for hospitality.  There are probably full meals in the chabad house.
just spoke to Chabad in Leblon and they no longer do meals only in Copacabana, so may stay there, which would be a bummer cause the Sheraton which has C and P avail is ten min walk from Leblon.

What's the deal with Visa's?
Might be in GRU for 12 hours, as I understand it if I don't leave the airport I don't need, but seems like a waste. Is it possible to get at arrival, or do you need to shlep to a consulate?

Need to get a Visa in advance of departure (5 or 10 years for $160).

If you plan on returning in 10 years then go for it.

...Visa in advance of departure (5 or 10 years for $160).

If you plan on returning in 10 years then go for it.

Really?! :-\

Why was my visa only good for 2 years?

But are you sure 10 years?

B/c I was thinking recently of visiting, but was actually very discouraged by this visa mishugas.

If it's really 10 years that'd be a little more encouraging..

It's up to 10 years now for tourist visas in Brazil and Argentina.

Did anyone in our great country ever try to finally put an end to this visa reciprocity craziness?

Weren't Bush and isn't Obama trying to "build positive relations" with Brazil etc?
Unless, maybe there's some good reasoning behind this?  US doesn't like Brazilian tourists?

I think if they came to a final understanding with this and got rid of this, it would be a step in the right direction.

Perhaps someone start a "we the people" petition to the white house...

I'm guessing that's the price the US charges everyone. We can't just have ppl walking in, so they require a visa application, which costs money
