The thing I liked so much about google reader is that I could read it on the computer, then simply navigate to gReader on my phone and pick up and read whatever unread I had left.

Any programs that have that? Both a PC platform and a mobile platform?

You get the necessary features with the free version. Screenshot of their pricing scheme attached.

Use it all day from home and on phone. Hoping for a good simple alternative.

How is it? If you've used Google Reader can you tell us how it compares?

I don't think he was answering you, I think he was simply saying that he was using Google Reader and hoping for a good alternative...

According to the devs of Reeder, which I am obsessed with, they are working on another solution for syncing feeds once Reader dies. I'm going to hold off switching to Newsblur until I see what they come up with.

Its absolutely ridiculous that they're shutting it down. I've been using it for 7+ years, almost every single day. They should keep it alive, its not like they were spending any money developing new features anyways. They also have the ads in the feeds to help monetize it. They can even add more if they'd like.

It's probably the servers.
I say load it with ads. Just keep it. No ads at present in my feed.

It's definitely the servers. But any service that can't pull in the cost of the servers its running on isn't worth jack. Google reader is not in that boat. It can pull in far more than that.

BD"E :'( I'm hoping a reader clone comes out. What I'll miss most is the ability to instantly search all the items in a specific Google Reader folder.

Welcome back! Now change your signature... :P

http://www.quora.com/Google-Reader-Shut-Down-March-2013/Why-is-Google-killing-Google-Reader
Good article. I bet that they were collecting to a ton of user data in relation to content, which seems like it would be very useful in improving their search algorithm's ability to sniff out good content and value. That supposedly is the new focus at Google search as seen by the Panda and Penguin updates.
The shutdown goes against Google's historical trends. They usually provide a free service and collect user data in return.
Intriguing that they would shut it down to focus on G+

I don't get why they are closing Reader. Isn't it a bad move, it ruins the trust people have in Google. For example if they open a dropbox competition (I think they actually did), people won't trust that it's going to be around forever. Even Gmail, you never know, maybe it will die. It ruins the trust people have in the company.

I agree with you. Btw their Dropbox competitor is Google Drive, which absolutely blows.
Google is known for having a ton of projects in constant beta and shutting down the unsuccessful ones. Most of the other shutdowns nobody cared about because nobody used them. Reader is very different obviously.
