We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next four months.
Quote from Google:Why on earth would they kill such a useful tool?"over the years usage has declined" ... הא גופא קשיא!
Any suggestions about the best alternative to migrate to?
I'm going to take another look at feedly. They have said they will replicate the Google Reader APIs so that everything will be seamless. Never thought Google Reader would dissappear. I use it a couple times every hour.

Tried feedly. Promptly uninstalled. I need one that looks exactly like Reader.
This is terrible news! I am going to try out Fever only because it is the only other RSS service supported by Reeder, which IME, is the best RSS reader for iOS. I'll let you guys know how it works out.
Saw this late last night. Terrible! What are people going to switch to?
Probably because they never monetized it. :-(
