If you don't have ESPN+ - basically there are a couple factors.
1) they changed the "take foul" to be a technical plus maintain possession. So there are now more transition opportunities as teams shy away from "take fouls".
2) there's a bigger emphasis on offensive rebounding now, which results in more opportunities for the offense. This may be related to the "take foul" transition rule change.

Could that have to do with the game being rougher back then? I think we've discussed before how teams from the 90's would get crushed in today's league because they'd get foul calls every defense play.

That seems logical to lead to a higher scoring game.

Na it's all about the players and coaches mindset, they only care about scoring and being the next Jordan. They arent looking to actually win the game.
