Is the S95 better than a $99 Elph for someone shooting in automatic?

I'd say yes. Ex- it should take better pictures in low light.

That being said many people are happy enough with the pictures from a $99 Elph.

Though I imagine if you have a camera like the s95 that has easier controls you may start adjusting the settings whereas in a $99 elph the settings are more difficult to get to that some wouldn't bother.

It seems I am late to the party - but I have done a lot of research + traveling - IMHO SH260 is the best.

Yes, no question about it. Even if you don't use all the features, it still has a far better sensor and lens.

+1. I wouldn't hesitate to buy refurbished from them so long as it come with a warranty (although I couldn't find any warranty info on the site).

Imo that warranty isn't long enough for a camera, I would take every extra day I can get for a camera. I would buy new

HT to SomethingFishy for pointing out what seems to be a really good deal: The Panasonic GX-1 mirrorless camera for less than $250 on sale today. No idea how long the sale will last but I bought one without the lens. The body + lens package is $449 for the silver cam, but if you buy the body it's about $244 and you can get the lens separately for $137 = app. $390 total.

I don't  know much about these cameras/lenses but people have been complaining about the powerzoom lens that comes with the third package on Amazon.

thanks. but the seller also has open box ones under used for $199 which he says come with manufacturers warranty. I messaged him to find out if it comes with full warranty. if it does I may jump on it. @something fishy-do you recommend this as a starter camera? is this deal as good as it gets?

I wouldn't go with open box from a no-name seller. Not worth $44 IMO.

Otherwise this is an insane deal, I say go for it.

Yes, the full warranty is in effect and this item can be returned. This is unopened authorized Panasonic product. The only issue is a scuffing or tear on the original box.

still go for the regular new?

Here is a really handy feature on Amazon, where they will tell you which lenses will work with your camera. Check it out: http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&finderLevel1=Panasonic&finderLevel2=Lumix%20G%20Series&finderLevel3=DMC-GX1&node=6207565011&showTab=f

They have pretty good reviews on Amazon, so maybe you could trust them on that. If it were me I'd buy both and thoroughly test the 'open box' one. If it seems OK I'd keep it and return the other one, but if it doesn't at least I didn't miss out on the deal since I'll keep the $244 one.
