I don't understand why people call their spouse mommy when they're talking to her. I would understand if you tell your kid give this to mommy and not say your wifes name but to speak to each other referring to each other as daddy and mommy I never understood. If someone doesn't mind explaining it to me I'd really appreciate it.
Do you have kids?  How old is the oldest?

2 and 2 and I gotta agree with him.
1) If it is good enough for the R"Y, it is good enough for me. (not necessarily a reason, but at least a s'neef)
2) It just makes it easier with the kids.  Sure you can get them to stop, but this way the problem is avoided completely.
3) If someone is already using "endearing name", e.g. honey, dear, etc...IMO, this is no different.
4) I may be way off here, but I think I remember seeing something in a sefer regarding tznius.  (Please don't ask for a mara makom, because I have no clue...for all I know, I just made it up.)

You call your rebetzin by her first name, or an endearing nickname?

Not yet. This question bothered me my whole life I never understood it and I don't think I will ever do it with my wife. There's a lot of things we have to teach our kids in life and I think its better to explain it to them then to avoid the issue.

Always by her first name in front of the kids.

What issue? The kids will call mommy by her first name? Never had a problem with that.

Rafis already passed the mimicking stage (lasted a few days) and passed alef beis, ABCs and 1-20 while we're at it :)
We're not gonna call each other mommy and tatty, that's just seems odd to me.

Is that similar to: Rafi playing ball with a friend.  The ball rolls away, his friend yells, "Rafi....chase".  Your son turns around and says, "Another A/A?"

Most of the people I know who do it don't do it for any specific purpose.

I don't just think its strange I actually think its bad chinuch. From a young age children should be told what they should or shouldn't do. It's not only about mimicking. They should also allowed to be taught that there are differences between the way one interacts with their peers and the way one acts with someone older than them. If some of you are from Lakewood that might be too difficult a concept to grasp
