Long car ride with a newborn tips needed
« on: October 01, 2014, 10:11:13 PM »
I searched all over and couldn't find a thread for this so I'm going to start a new one.
We are planing to drive up to cleveland next week and we are kind of nervous about the whole trip since we are not sure how it is going to go in a car for 8 hours not including stops and nursing and anything else that can come up on the way (baby screaming etc.) so I was thinking maybe we can dedicate this thread to tips from people who have done it before. TIA

IMO a newborn is way easier than a slightly older baby, toddler, or kid whom you will need to entertain. I've found that the cars motion kept the newborn sleeping unless baby was hungry. But YMMV
First time i drove long distance with a baby it took a few extra hours due to stopping every time baby had to be taken out of the car seat.
For the return trip, the baby was fed etc (all in the backseat) without stopping and that's what we have done ever since.

I have done NY-Silver Spring multiple times now with a newborn. some trips are better than others. Just make sure to give extra time for feedings.

It all depends how your baby handles it. We have learned to feed right before getting on the road (if possible) and when he was a NB he needed to be fed once along the way. Now he can sleep the entire ride so we try to do it in one shot. I am not sure what else there is to say.

Just make sure the sun will be blocked.  If the sun constantly shines on the baby he/she will be waking up

I just hope you don't mean nursing while driving. I have heard people tell me this and I couldn't believe they would take baby out of the seat...

Would tips for long card rides with all different age kids be OT? Should I start a NEW THREAD?  :P Or maybe mods can broaden thread title?

Just to give chizuk, in case someone needs it...last summer we did 60+ hours of driving (24,24,12) with two newborns (2 months) and a bunch of other kids.

Where there is a will, well...

On the Benadryl package it says do not use this product to make kids fall asleep which leads me to believe that it is extremely effective at making kids fall asleep.

That was a joke! I'm sure it IS very effective... and very DANGEROUS! Please nobody really do this!

We used Benadryl on a flight to E'Y a number of years ago.  It knocked two kids like a charm, the other was wired the entire flight.

FWIW, our pediatrician has ok'd (maybe suggested?) it in the past.

Just to clarify...it was 24-26 hours over 2 days; two week break; 24-26 hours over 2 days; two week break; 14 hours over two days.

Good point I'm busy purchasing sun shades on Amazon. If I'm already doing it any other items worth getting to make the trip easier?
