Do you know of a 501(c)3 gemach
« on: September 24, 2015, 01:43:14 AM »
Does anyone know of a money loan gemach that's 1) a 501(c)3 organization, and is also 2) trustworthy, and 3) worth donating to?

So let me get it straight.

You lend them money and get a deduction.
An unspecified amount of time later you get all your money back from them.

Helloooo IRS.....

Then why both of these criteria?
2) trustworthy, and 3) worth donating to?

Which wouldn't you want an organization to have?

Lol. It's funny that we are all hypothesizing on the OP's comments. Just saying that if it's for donating purposes only, then the fact that it's worth donating to means it's "trustworthy".

I used to know one, but unfortunately it is no longer active.
As to all the comments here, from what I understand, lending $ to these gemachs is indeed a huge chessed, (they are in need of funds) even if you get it back later. Being that the person who ran the gemach I knew was meticulously honest. I'm sure there is a legal way to do this... Not sure details tho

I'd like to donate the money, I won't be getting it back - I'd also like certain people to be lent the money, and when they return it, it will belong to the gemach. So I'd like them to be trustworthy, to know I can work with them, and also worth donating to, because utlimately the money will be theirs.

Does that sound reasonable?

You can do that through any 501c3 unless you specifically want it donated to a lending gemach after.

Not sure where you are located, but there is a fund in the five towns that will work with you on things like that

Nothing wrong with it. If you want your money to go to a specific עני they can help, so as not to embarrass them.
Just in case it can be misconstrued I will take it down

Can you please explain what's wrong with doing this? Anytime they get donations, they lend it to people. WHy should it be problematic if I ask them to lend it to a specific person first?

Is there a specific city you want?

Ideally, in the NY/NJ area.

You probably could, but in this case, because of specifics, not going to help.

I'm torn between being amused and horrified that there's an automatic assumption that the donation has to be a scam.
