I think that if you pay for a flight you can earn miles for the purchase as well as 12,000 mile for flying. Plus you don't have to deal with limited availability. So even if you need to pay a few dollars more then the miles are worth i would still say pay for the ticket and sell the miles.

if the value of the ticket is say double what you think you can get for the miles. There really is not a set rule. I was just saying that if you are going to save only a few hundred dollars, there are benefits to purchasing the ticket with money.

usually when flying economy selling points will get you more for your money in addition to accruing more miles, yet in high season check what your getting for your miles to see if it still pays off to sell

Yup, if you've got 100k BA you can use that for 4 domestic tickets on AA. Domestic tickets on AA sometimes run upwards of $500.

Who pays the transfer fee, you or the person that buys the miles?

Transfer? They usually just have you book a ticket and they reimburse you for the ticketing fees/surcharges.

When you sell the miles you transfer it to someones, acct.

Also im just wondering how does the business work, they buy the miles from you and do what  with it?

Gosh, you really have to be spoonfed  ::) Brokers buy the miles to sell award tickets to other people who are willing to pay more than they're paying you. So they make a profit from that margin. Since they are selling award tickets, they don't have you transfer the miles to a different account, they just have you book an award ticket.

Sam, the advertiser on the main site, doesn't even have you do that! Give him you're account number and "the check is in the mail."

There's nothing like him!

you are probably referring to accounts like aa ba ua co that dont need transferring and there is no transfer fee the op might be asking about amex points that can have a transfer fee

Yes, with him you will have to pay the transfer fee, but you don't have to start booking tickets.

It depends on how much the tickets cost. I flew in the summer and no way would selling cover the cost of tickets. My husband flew in the winter and was able to book the exact non stop he wanted by selling points. So it depends...
