Has anyone ever walked up to the ticket counter at the airport, asked for the next available flight, and taken it?

Basically you buy a ticket, go there, don't look anything up online, just do what locals on a plane or when you land say to do.

If you are done you can go back to the airport and repeat until you go home.

I have babysitting next week for 5 days and no where planned to go.

Considering this....

Would love to do it if I had the cash and if I had zero other responsibilities.

Have done this but knew where I was going.
Walked in asked for next flight to xyz etc. and got on my way.
Did one version of it with miles walked in to airport then booked a mileage ticket based on next flight to my destination.
(Went to counter asked for KSML they asked why didn’t you reserve before? I said I booked this while standing at the other end of the room. this one was int.)

Definitely a fun way to fly. No destination gotta be even better, but what airline do you go to? That’s basically choosing the destination for some airlines. And in busy airports what does next flight mean? There’s probably a bunch around the same time and may depend on how fast you end up entry-gate and what gate they leave from if in a big airport. I therefore concluded that there’s always gonna be some choosing involved unless you leave it to the ticketing agent. But no NEXT flight technically…

You leave it to the ticketing agent.
Exactly.

Thinking out loud, can also let the Uber take you to an airline counter. Or just choose the airline with the largest network at the airport.

A lot of similar ideas on YouTube, such as Simon Wilson's playing monopoly in real life, or (I've seem a few of these) fly to the cheapest place a few times in a row

If you have anyone else involved, you can compete like in Jet Lag The Game

How do you know if you should pack suntan lotion or long underwear?

Summer would be a more ideal time for this.

And, yes this is one of the reasons the Mrs. wasn't happy with this option.

Booked somewhere else already for now :))

Probably better to limit it to “vacation places” or  “somewhere warm/cold” etc.

That's the whole point, you'll have to figure that out..

Doing a search the day before for the cheapest flight under a certain distance can work and then you can plan a drop more.
