I thought he meant that he spotted the pin on the way on, and was planning on taking a photo when the flight attendant passed by for meal service. But since it was a short flight and there was turbulence, there ended up being no meal service.

Could be. I was wondering why there would be no (phone) service just because there was turbulence.

That she came over to you privately and spoke to you in a way that was positive to you is the way it should be done. FAs who do the same to Palestinians are also doing it the right way.
