Get the baby used to driving.... by putting him in the car seat and drive every day around your block for about 2 hours a day.... start about 14 days prior scheduled trip date :)

did grand canyon to phoenix last year (the way up north we did in parts) and my son (3 months at the time) happens to hate the car
he was crying as we were leaving the national park and i was going almost 20 over the minuscule national park speed limit and of course a sheriff pulls me over
obviously my son stops crying just then. the guy mentioned he had a 3 month old also and then left to his car to check my license.
came back with an offer-write me up for 20 over in a national park, or make me feel bad in front of my son for speeding with him in the back seat.
which one you think i chose ;)

Newborns usually sleep alot, especially in a moving car. Please NEVER take baby out to nurse while car is moving. Personally i wouldn't even bottle feed such a tiny baby in a moving car. Babies "choke" while feeding and you need to be able to sit them upright if that happens. That being said, if your wife is so soon after birth, you should anyways be stopping so she can walk around and get circulation moving.

If you can make the timing work out, do the nursing when you need to stop for gas so you don't need to waste as much time.

I just hope you don't mean nursing while driving. I have heard people tell me this and I couldn't believe they would take baby out of the seat...
It might take a little getting used to, but it can be done without taking the baby out of the seat.

On the Benadryl package it says do not use this product to make kids fall asleep which leads me to believe that it is extremely effective at making kids fall asleep.

That was a joke! I'm sure it IS very effective... and very DANGEROUS! Please nobody really do this!
It doesn't always work, sometimes (as notanon pointed out) it has the opposite effect.

That's why you do a test run before a trip.

Nu, how was the car ride ?
Was about to post.
It was amazing we stopped twice for a feed but we made up the time between the stops we got here quicker than when my wife was pregnant and we needed to stop every second rest stop for a bathroom session.
Also the baby slept all the way through everytime she started waking up we put on music and she went right back to sleep.
It was amazing since for the first time in 2 weeks me and my wife had some time to talk to each other and relax while the baby slept right through.
Just to mention that I bought a few gadgets for the trip and the ones that really helped me were a back seat mirror   shades for the Windows and we got with our Diper bag a small changing mat which was perfect for changing her on the seat.
To sum it up the trip went by like a dream thanks all for all your help

Ha, you think you have it down pat, don't you? ;) Just don't be surprised if going back it is a living hell, baby crying the whole time, throwing up, etc. That's the way kids are. Completely unpredictable. Most probably, it will take several kids and years until you really have it down pat.  :D
On the other hand, a few, selected, lucky people do actually make it each time (at least that's what it seems like from all of Dan's TRs)

But I'm happy to hear that you're up, 1-0.
