Blackberry Playbook

What are the reviews on this device?
Now that they are deeply discounted (similar to touchpad) is it a good deal? Or is it a worse device for twice the price?

Has it gone as low as the touchpad? Weren't most of the deals for refurbs?

IIRC reviews said the hardware was top-notch, OS half-baked. You also won't have much in the apps department.

They've been going to 199 for 16 gb, new.
You can get some of that cost back with various cb offers, etc

I've been considering it as well, especially after seeing that it has 2 cameras w/ better mp than the ipad.

I'm concerned that their market share is so low (below 1% I think), that they'll close down the product line soon, similar to the HP Touchpad.

They're commited to the market as opposed to HP

(Mega)pixel-count is only a part of the equation when evaluating a digital camera. Some 7 megapixel cameras produce better images than other 15 megapixel camera.

I don't think RIM will stay in business if they abandon their QNX-based OS development. A bigger concern is whether they could stay aflot until someone(?) decides they're worth buying.

So I went ahead and bought it from BB for 200 (the 16 gb).

My reasoning is that, from all the reviews I read, the primary problems with it were 3.
1) Didn't support Android apps when they rolled it out
2) No native email ability
3) Bad job rolling it out.

It appears that in February they will be rolling out updates to correct #1 and #2, and #3 isn't a concern for me. And in all truth, #2 also isn't.

However, the reviews were very complimentary on the browser, running diff programs at the same time, screen quality, and build. And the main part that got me was the 2 video cameras, since the Kindle Fire doesn't have any.

Wish me luck!

Well, that's not a good start :(

A good review I read on one of the tech sites was about how this and the Touchpad were both flops.
However, the reasons given for the HP for being a flop centered around its harware, quality, build, etc.
For the Playbook, it was the 3 issues listed above, all of which are correctable. So it's a bit of a gamble, but hopefully it'll pay off

Now $299 for 64GB (and 16/32GB as well).

I hope whoever ends up buying RIM actually capitalizes on their strengths and keeps the BB brand alive (as an improvement/evolution of its present form).

Recovery is a long shot for them, no? They're bleeding marketshare, and their technology gets more obsolete every day.

What for? How could they possibly add value to what they have now?

Blackberry OS 10.

Theoretically, yes. But at the rate they're bleeding customers they'll have a platform but no customer base.

It's a very real problem, but I'd imagine the people making the decisions over there (read:directors) would probably have to weigh that possibility (eventuality?).

The fact remains that Blackberry OS 10 would be one reason to wait.

Obviously the board/executives will make the decision, not me. My point was that waiting for OS10 might actually be detrimental if they shed more customers than whatever BBX (or whatever they end up calling it) is worth.
