This may not be the right thread, but it's somewhat connected.

For redoing a basement rental -

1 - Should someone use click or glue vinyl?
2 - 12 or 20 mil?
3 - Should bedrooms be carpet or vinyl?
4 - If vinyl, should they be the same as DR/hall or different?
5 - What color vinyl looks like it'll be in for a while?
6 - What color paint should walls be?

Thanks!

I don't know about the others, but definitely carpet in the bedrooms.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Totally not carpet in basements. Clean, updated wood-look vinyl. Current colors lean taupey- brown. Not gray. Choose floor then pick paint. 12 mil is enough. 20 mil is thicker- probably depends on what they price out at.

Ugh. I hate hard bedroom floors. If I was looking for an apartment it would be a deal breaker.

You sound exactly like the contractor, except he said 12 mil wasn't worth it.
Any opinion on the other questions?

Is this a generational thing?
We keep hearing that young couples prefer vinyl throughout the apartment.

I’m not that young… vinyl is not as cold as stone, it’s easy to keep clean, and doesn’t get musty or stained. You can always put down a rug between the beds… Obviously people have personal preferences but the OP was asking for current trends. And don’t forget about Lakewood water issues…
I don’t know anyone who redid a basement or built new who put carpet downstairs. Most people I know are ripping it out usually due to flooding and mold issues.
Two flooring places told me 12 was fine for basement apartments.

I recently redid my basement, and added vinyl in the hallway. 20 mil click vinyl as it will last longer. Had the same question about carpet or vinyl for the bedrooms, vinyl is less comfortable but is cheaper and should last longer. Ended up going with a better quality carpet that should hopefully be good for more than 1 tenant. More expensive but I’m getting better rent so may as well use it towards improvements.

I hope their prospective tenants are aware of this before they move in.
I lived in basements for almost a decade and never had flooding or mold. I have a basement in my house that's 5 years old and also has none of these issues BH.
Maybe older basements are more susceptible?

If a basement has water issues, then putting down vinyl is just putting lipstick on a pig. And possibly dishonest.

idk but it's very cold to walk on, not ideal for bedrooms (though you can always put an area run on top if necessary)
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Wow, that's an eye opener for me. I don't know anyone having carpet today, I always thought it's something from the distant past. (my late bobby had, was very cozy indeed)

Perhaps it's a Lakewood vs Brooklyn thing?
