At the end of the day the story is what matters and the more this gets out the better. But definitely been a learning experience.

IMHO: No mistakes! This is good. He's doing you a favor spreading this around, you're inextricably linked with this story and anyone who clicks into it beyond just watching the video will soon come to your article (which I assume is your primary goal). Even the video he tweeted is a quote tweet from a thread that started out linking to your story. Since then he's retweeted you and people quote tweeting you a bunch.
At the time he snagged your video, was it even on Twitter? I don't think so right? So not sure what choice he had if he wanted to share it as a video to his followers. And having him write the tweet and the caption added equity to the tweet itself, he has a lot of followers for a reason (mostly big names in Jewish/conservative media).

Probably better for next time to watermark so that you don't care who posts it and where, you'll always have attribution, and like you said, also upload it natively to twitter next time as well. It's a lot easier to go viral quickly on twitter vs youtube. And this way people like meturgeman can retweet and add their own caption but it'll still link to your account right under the video
