To me this is one of the saddest takes from this whole episode. I never expected LH to be Jew-lovers, but reading the comments of Self-hating Jews and non-Jews on the MSM about religious travelers makes me realize how much of a negative impact has been made by some selfish individuals.
As bad as it is that some don't follow rules, I think it's even worse when we rip apart our own.
Regarding ואהבת לרעך כמוך,
Nobody is perfect. We aren't and our friends aren't.
But if we read this sentence carefully, we'll notice that רעך - "your friend" has some רע - "badness" associated with them. That is part of them, and we should love that part of them just like we love ourselves.
A person with a healthy self image will not focus on the bad parts of themselves. They see it, they know that they have many faults, they know that they need to work on lots of things, but that's not how they how themselves as a whole.
We like to think of ourselves as good people, with room for improvement.
So if we love our friend - with all their imperfections - as we love ourselves - despite our imperfections, then it will be very difficult for us to speak loshon hara about them.
With this attitude in mind, we can also look at different groups in Orthodox Judaism the same way. I find that many times we may have prejudice against certain groups within Orthodox Judaism.
"This" group has an issue with this, "that" group doesn't care about this mitzvah, "this" group only cares about their own group, etc.
Using this recipe of ואהבת לרעך כמוך, none of that exists anymore. All the groups are like me. They are not perfect, just like I'm not, but if I need to tell you about myself, I'll be focusing on my positive attributes.
Therefore, when I see a Ashkenazi/Sefardi/Yemenite/Chassidish/Litvish/Modox/Israeli/rich/poor/whatever Jew, that's just a Jew. No label. Just a Jew with some great attributes and that's the only thing that matters. That person is special, they are great because of a whole bunch of reasons.
Yes, at times we may notice that there's some רע connected to them, but we should notice it only when necessary, the same way we notice the רע in ourselves only when necessary. Sometimes, we need to protect ourselves, and somebody may warn us about a special Yid that has some negative tendencies. But that's still a special Yid (who is human and has some things to work on, but that's not the main focus).
