I called them and now know that: 1) the flight need not be booked with the card to get the free bag. The skyMiles number associated with the Delta Credit Card need only be on the ticket, or even not and just present the credit card at check in. 2) the companions who also get free checked bags don't need to be on same reservation, merely have the same itinerary as the card holder. So in my case, since my friend is on my flight, he can get the free bag. I will just need to show my delta card when he checks his bag. It is however, apparently, impossible to merge reservation numbers.

Everything went smoothly and exactly as I was told. My friend's ticket wasn't booked by me and wasn't connected to me any way, other than us checking in at the same time - I just had to show them my Delta card. My free bag was automatic, I didn't have to show the card.
