I recently had a muffler issue, and the mechanic told me that if I don't fix it, I need to keep the windows open, as the fumes remain in the car, and could be dangerous. I have no opinion about this; I'm just reporting what I was told.

That was probably a bad Catalytic converter, and that would prevent the air from flowing through the exhaust system properly and would cause it to come through the vents of the car.
But in this case the hole is in a spot that if anything help the fumes get out faster

Its a serious thing, if the fumes can't escape properly there is a big risk of it coming into the car through the vents, although in most cars if u stuff the muffler well the car would shut off because the air intake can't take in more (its possible that your mechanic saw a leak in the line somewhere where It can come into the car easily )
