intel i5 or i7
« on: August 17, 2012, 01:45:24 AM »
I would like to use my HP coupon towards a new desktop system which I really need.

I do a lot of work on cs5 and almost always have that program open along with microsoft 2010.

Can anyone please help me pick a good system?  Do you think I need to go with the i7 or would i5 by good enough.

TIA

You should probably get i7. Also lookout how much rpm the HDD has, as it can significantly make a difference. Typically it's 5400rpm, so check for 7200rpm.

Very rare for a desktop to have a 5400rpm AFAIK

With all due respect, you're simply mistaken. The (i3,) i5 and i7 lines are (all) parellel, just (low-,) mid- and hi-range respectively, each is at their 3rd generation, with new iterations coming out all the time.

For simple Photoshop i5 would be suffice.

The i5 Desktop version is much more powerful than the laptop version.

I would recommend the i7 as its worth the extra $$ for productivity.

I'm not sure if you have the option (I know that option is by laptops) but to upgrade to a hybrid hard drive will be a step up in speed.

thanks mr o i very well can be wrong, i was under the impression that an i5 and i7 as long as they have the same core (dual/quad) the i7 is  faster, meaning it lets more programs run the same time, of course if u had a quad core i5 3.33 gHz and a dual core i7 2.75 gHz the i would take the i5 bec its much quicker... am i wrong?

Not so simple, just because the Toyota Avalon is a pricier model than the Camry, doesn't mean a 2002 base model Avalon is better than a 2009 loaded Camry... (hope the car analogy helps)

so were both saying the same point :-)

No, you said the i7 is newer, and you're simply wrong (that's like saying Avalon is newer than Camry).

Either way, even if i7 is a faster processor, it isn't always the best way to go (for less heavy users it might be better to go with i5 which might not drain the battery as quickly. In the OPs case i7 seems to be the way to go (as Name Changed said).

Probably $700.  I don't need a monitor, speakers, keyboard etc. or Office.  I have all of those.

. . . You could've at least gotten a monitor or printer. Or you could've posted it here and there would've been many takers.
