I don't believe that CX operates a 747 out of JFK anymore.
My point. It sounds like you're only going to YVR for the 747, correct or am I missing something?

CX does not operate a 747 out of JFK, and the same 777 continues on from YVR-HKG as the one that flew JFK-YVR. (CX does not operate a 747 out of YVR either, as of 10/2012.)

When it comes to availability, you take what you're given :)

There a reason you spent so much avios instead of AA- do you just have a ton of avios and don't want to waste aa

I'm planning a similar trip for december but am concentrating on star flights instead of oneworld..

Currently booked as:

Su CX889, JFK-YVR-HKG, 10:40pm-6:55am +2
[in HKG for ~34 hours = All day Tu and most of We]
Wed CX703, HKG-BKK, 5:15pm-7:00pm
[at some point shortly thereafter, on some airline, go to CNX for 4.5 days -- don't currently plan on spending any time in BKK]
Mo CX702, BKK-HKG, 6:40pm-10:35pm
Tu CX888, HKG-YVR-JFK, 12:30am-7:00am

The question I have for you fine folk is should I cut out my ~34 hours in HKG (and a night in the Grand Executive Harbor Suite at the Grand Hyatt) in favor of more time in Thailand, specifically CNX or HKT?

Because I fear the mileage discussion may have derailed the question at hand, I again seek insight from those who have done HKG and/or CNX/HKT (though the opinions of those who have not are also welcome :P)

That depends on your preferences. IMO 4.5 days is quite short for Thailand and you should definitely use that extra day and a half in Thailand. That should give you 6 days to either stay in CNX or split 3 days cnx and 3 days hkt

That's kind of the way I was thinking, but then again, considering I have some Hyatt suite nights to burn, and I'm passing through HKG anyway, I wanted to put it out there.

I hear ya- I would personally choose Thailand and sell/trade the hyatt nights if they're expiring soon. You can stay in some of the most luxurious resorts in the world there super cheap

I've been to CNX and HKT. Personally, I would not spend more time than you have allotted in CNX. As for the beaches, that can be real nice, but I did not find it unbelievably spectacular (have been to HKT and Krabi). So I would do HKG (which I assume you have't been to).

I like the idea, especially since HKG seems to be a good place to go w/o kids, and for 36 hrs.
But you should definitely return to Thailand and do island hopping, snorkeling, and full moon parties when you have a chance.

They're not expiring that soon, I'd just like to get as most bang for my buck (at the GH in HK, the room is ~$1000/night, whereas in NY the room would costs less).

I've been to CNX and HKT. Personally, I would not spend more time than you have allotted in CNX. As for the beaches, that can be real nice, but I did not find it unbelievably spectacular (have been to HKT and Krabi). So I would do HKG (which I assume you have't been to).

So you think 4.5 days in CNX is sufficient? What about HKT? Do I just skip it altogether?

I actually have been to HKG a few years back, but was for business. No time for touring at all.

I like the idea, especially since HKG seems to be a good place to go w/o kids, and for 36 hrs.
But you should definitely return to Thailand and do island hopping, snorkeling, and full moon parties when you have a chance.

So 2 votes for HKG, and 1 vote against. Awesome.

Can I not do island hopping/snorkeling with the time I have? What if I skip HKG? :P

Meh. I'd do 3 days CNX and 3 days HKG with a side trip to Macau or Shenzen.
Any Hawaiian island beats HKT.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I think that's plenty of time for CNX. I was there for Thu/Fri/Shabbos and did most of the typical CNX activities discussed here.

There are two things I would have done with more time: (1) A "real" hill tribe tour. Meaning seeing authentic life in the tribes, not a show for the tourists. But some people claim this takes at least 2-3 days to do right as you need to go far out with a proper guide. (2) A full day scooter/motorbike trip. I did a more modest half-day trip into the mountains (which I recommend), but would have loved to go further out - there is some spectacular scenery (you can google routes).

For snorkeling, I think you would do better in the Caribbean.

Great, thanks for the ideas.

Did you write a TR of your trip to CNX?

I think you should definitely spend 36-48 hours in HKG. Especially if you've never really visited. For Macau, I think one evening is enough or maybe you can go in late afternoon if you really want to see a few different hotels/casinos. A few things you could visit: Victoria Peak, Mongkok Night Market, the laser show from harbor is cute, and of course eat at the JCC (try to go for the sunday BBQ - but I see you are there Wed... too bad  ;)

Thanks for the input. It seems from the crowd that doing HKG+CNX is the way to go.

Now to begin planning what we're going to do in each place--a task both exhilarating and exhausting.

Have u been to hk before? Giving yourself an extra day in Thailand doesn't really help.. Splitting time in hkt will probably not leave u with enough time anywhere

Hk is great for tailoring.. If you've never been then def go to hk if you've been n tailoring doesn't interest you then I would go to Thai sooner

Been there briefly for a few days on business about 6-7 years ago.

I guess I'll stick with HK for 36 hours, see some sights, go out to dinner, and do some tailoring (which I did a lot of when I was there last time).

Can someone recommend a good tailor?

Or YVR :P

Wife should be finished soon, hopefully. This one is on her (as payment for the trip ;) )
