computer damage from Sandy
« on: October 30, 2012, 05:47:48 PM »
So my office completely flooded and my computer is all wet. Any way to recover the data? Right now I'm just letting it dry and hoping for the best. Anything I should be doing?

+1, try not to shake up the HDDs, put them each in a sealed container with rice and give it 1-2 days.

Take the hard drive out - that is what contains all of your data!!

Put that in a ziplock bag with white rice.

I would tell you to be carefull with the hard drive - rice may not completely dry it and it may short when you turn it on and damage the drive and firmware! Computer try your luck. How oild is the desktop btw?

Dont put the hard drive into rice - some of the dust from the rice may go into the hard drive holes and destroy the drive!

Most data recovery labs will tell you to ship the drive to them SUMBERSED in water!!! ( I don't always recommend that) in order to avoid corrosion! Putting the drive in rice doesn't take away the internal water damage and may cause more damage when it dries due to the layer of dried water and dirt

Is it old, then It's probably the fan full of dust. You can try blowing with compressed air into the air vents, or even better undo a few screws on the back and clean out the fan with a brush and air.

Mine was just under 2 years old when that happened. It was running very slow and heating up.
It was still in warranty so I brought it to a computer tech in Lakewood who removed a ton of dust/lint etc from it. He ended up charging $250 (cause he initially spent time trying to diagnose the software) but Amex gladly paid the bill!
