I recently Had to fly from San Diego to NY city for my sister's funeral. The funeral was the following day from her passing, so I did not have time to plan and prepare my trip. I arrived at the airport and there was only one flight remaining with US Air. They ended up charging me approximately $1500.00 for that one way flight. I had no choice and purchased the flight, in order to be in NY in time for the funeral. This amount is about 4 or 5 times the typical price for a one way ticket.  I was wondering if anyone has advice on this issue and what I can do to have this fare reduced, after the fact.

Nothing to do post-facto and I'm very sorry for your loss.
But do you not have any miles you could have used?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Very sorry for your loss.

Here is some info on bereavement fares. they should have offered it to you when you where at the airport though.

Unfortunately, they usually aren't cheaper IME.

I once had to switch my flight due to a levaya. They made me send in papers for proof. They then allowed me to switch the dates for free. It was Jet Blue btw. I think the best thing to do is contact corporate and explain your situation. Writing a detailed personal letter to a senior member at the airline can work. (If not its about a half hour of your time).
Good luck

Bereavement fares are usually only 5% off.

It doesn't hurt to write a letter.

So sorry for you loss.... :(
My Sisters story:
When my Dad passed in Dec. my Sister came from London via Virgin .
During check in,  LHR lady at the counter asked her why she was coming
to SFO ... when she said she was going to our Dad's funeral. Lady said sorry
to hear that...  and just upgraded my sister to upper class which is Virgins First
class.  My Sister said she was so surprised and was tearful when Lady told her to
proceed to the Virgin lounge and seat in Upper class. :'( Although she did not ask
or said much to the Lady @ the counter she was upgraded without questions.
I guess there are still a lot of very good people out there. ;)
