Yes, I know people there and you can buy your way out of the army.  it's an official thing.  Also there are kosher restaurants, Jewish simcha halls and other open aspects of Jewish life.  There is anti-semitism for sure but ironically the Jews may be safer there now than in Europe...they don't have to have armed guards in front of their synagogues in Iran!

Crazy as this sounds, Iran is actually a pretty safe place for a tourist.

One of the few places on earth where being a member of the Press is more dangerous

Besides that tourist occasionally get arrested and accused of being a spy.

The State Department warns

“U.S. citizens may be subject to harassment or arrest while traveling or residing in Iran.”

Traveling to Iran is one of those type of things i do but wouldn't recommend anyone to try.

Not to take away from the adventure of your trip (nor am I recommending it either), but they issue lots of similar warnings and we tend to ignore them.

The tourists who have been arrested have not been on a casual tour of Tehran, Shiraz etc

Someone who studied the Middle East well, told me that the most democratic country in the Middle East is Israel, the second most democratic country in the  Middle East is Iran.  He tells me I know it sounds very funny to you but that's the fact.

Doesn't look luxurious, looks like a regular sleeper car. And it's kind of random.
