Urgent: lost passport in LGA tonight
« on: April 06, 2016, 11:29:07 PM »
Long story short, was flying from LGA to YYZ tonight. Wife used US passport while going through TSA but by the time we got to the gate 5 minutes later it was nowhere to be found. We were able to board with her nexus card and are now trying to figure out a plan for return trip on Sunday.

1) Assuming that TSA lost and found hasn't found it when I call tomorrow morning, I'll have to go consulate here in Toronto and get a replacement. Does anyone know how long it will take to get it?

2) If they did find it and have it in LGA, will she be able to fly back to LGA with just the nexus card and no passport? I know GE machines need a passport but will CPB agents let her in with just a nexus card?

TIA

many times a lost passport can be replaced in same day --- especially if have copy of it---

After the fact info----smart to upload copy of passport-drive license in case lost/stolen

Entry by land is OK with Nexus, no passport needed

Thanks but trying to avoid having to drive. Seems there are conflicting opinions on whether nexus is ok by itself without a passport when flying

Unfortunately don't have a copy but definitely the first thing I'm doing once we sort this out

And you can get your Nexus taken away if you try. But it could work

Do you have an employer that photocopied your passport when you started working for them? You can ask them for that copy.

Thanks. Seems really dumb though - if the nexus card is WHTI compliant, which it is, why do you also need a passport??

anyhow, we went to the consulate yesterday and got a temporary replacement good for 1 year so we're set for the return trip but a huge hassle nonetheless.

she got this passport <1 year ago so unfortunately not. The folks at the consulate were able to pull up the old one though on the computer and we got a replacement

Flying requires a passport, WHTI is only by land/sea.
Your emergency passport can be exchanged for a regular passport free of charge IIRC
