so does it only take 67.5 EK miles + YQ for EWR-ATH OW in F? based on a screenshot posted upthread.
if one was only interested in one way redemption, why would JAL still be considered as better option?
No, those rates were based off a RT (and taxes based off ex-EU). EK charges more miles per segment if booking a OW (call it a penalty if you will). Also, YQ is much higher ex-US.
OW EWR-ATH in F with EK is 85k + $550.
JAL is better for round trip
JAL is also better for OW (although it would be a shame not using the second segment in the next year).
EK F OW EWR-ATH:
EK = 85k MR + $550.
JAL = 100k SPG + $70 (plus you get another "free" flight home).
So for an extra 15k you save $480.
