Melbourne Master Thread

What are the best things to see/do? Where to eat? Where to stay?

Do we need to rent a car, or will the ferries do?

Cairns is more of a party town, I suggest going to PD, the sheraton there is cheap with C&P. To get there I rented a car but we were 4 guys, and driving, either you can do it and get used to it right away or not. There's also a bus for 40 AUD pp that you can take.
In the Sheraton there's a activity desk with a girl that knows the area really really well. I called her up before and setup the first day and went to see her when I got there to setup the rest. (You can charge all the activity's to your room and even use points) I went on the "posideon scuba/snorkeing boat (there are a few diff options) ours was really amazing!
I would also make sure to bring a poncho and bathing suits, it rains a lot there for 10-15 min at a time, so we just wore bathing suits all day.

I almost forgot, if you're going to be in Sydney over the new year the new years eve fireworks are SPECTACULAR!
The Park Hyatt SYD had no availability for then so we'll be in the Park Hyatt MEL for then.  Anything doing in MEL for new years?

Saw my post on the main site? I warned you!

The "Legend" of Glicks bagels come from the Gentiles in Australia. They think that eating bagels makes them smart. I would assume that the Yidden know better...

Aussies are totally clueless about food. Must be the fact that they had to eat in English prisons for so long....
So where else in MEL is decent?
We went to Carlisle to pick up food for our great ocean/grampians road trip.
We got bagels and cookies from Glicks both of which are barely edible.
We went to Nogga and got very expensive milchig food which was good but extremely overpriced.  And the burgers and sushi from Daneli's were well priced and good as well.

So far the best food has been the free kosher breakfast from the Park Hyatt.
Still need to get food for Tasmania...

Whoever told you to get cookies from Glicks. The only thing you get at Glicks is bread/Challah/bagels, and even that is YMMV.
Cookies you get at Heimishe, and danishes/pastries/cake at Lichtenstein's.

We went to the hotel where kimbelys is.
The front desk told us where the restaurant is, but the restaurant tells us that they're closed for 2 weeks because of some large event they're catering.

We went to My Flame but they're closed permanently.

So we went back to Daneli's and got a decent steak sandwich and a good burger and hot dog in puff pastry.

Are there any other good fleishig joints in town (not really looking for shwarma like from chick chicken)?

We'll probably check out the shemesh pizza shop next.

not that i know of.
Somebody mentioned Lamzinis Chinese but I just called and noone answered?  Are they still around?

Anyway I got a delicious blueberry muffin ($3.25) and some cookies ($1.30 for 5) from Haymishe.  My wife got a so-so chocolate muffin ($3.80) from Lichtenstein's, didn't taste so fresh to me.

Also Lichtenstein's is generally breathtakingly expensive.  Chocolate babka=$20.  Cakes=$47.50

Yup, but some places more than other's.  Daneli's seems perfectly reasonable.  Nogga and Lichtenstein's are out of control IMHO.

I have yet to see a hechsher on anything (makes it very difficult to shop for stuff unless I carry around my laptop and the telstra usb modem I bought here)  Are you saying they have a hechsher on the box?

Pick up the book or try and borrow it from someone.

If you go to a kosher supermarket it'll be much easier...
