Has anyone received Hungarian citizenship based on Hungarian ancestry? I believe they have made the process smoother but would like to hear from someone with experience.
Why would anyone want Hungarian citizenship? I'm pretty sure I can get but it never even crossed my mind to try, because I can't think of much benefit.
There is an Hungarian guy that helps you with all the formalities. He was hereast week, co.es down from time to time. Costs around $1500 and he does everything. You could bargain down.
It's an EU member state, so you can live, work, and travel freely anywhere in the EU.
All in, including translations? That's a good price. I paid a guy in Yerushalayim 10,000 NIS, and it took about a year, but got it done (included finding old paperwork etc.)
Are there tax or army draft ramifications?
The US is pretty much the only country that makes you pay taxes for earnings earned in a different country when you are a resident of a different country.
And the only country that gives you a tax refund for living in a foreign country
It's not like they're giving you anything here, they're just requiring you to file and possibly giving you a way to avoid double taxation.
The answer is:This. And depending on the circumstances it could be very straightforward compared to other EU states.
It seems very straightforward and no cost to apply besides the costs of obtaining and translating documents. Which by the way, even $1,500 is way overkill. Just do it yourself. @AsherO Do you speak a very basic Hungarian, because that is pretty much the only requirement aside from no criminal history and proof of ancestry?
"Notably, this Hungarian simplified naturalization (Egyszerűsített honosítás) path is different from the more limited Hungarian citizenship by declaration which does not require Hungarian language proficiency"Which one is being discussed here ?
Where do you see that? 3rd party website? The Hungarian government website is explicit that you do need passable Hungarian.ETA: I read too quickly. https://washington.mfa.gov.hu/eng/page/about-hungarian-citizenshipB. Says you don't need. C. Is where you do.
