The text message will contain a promo code that you key in on the device trade in site  http://www.verizonwireless.com/device-recycle/?custType=1. You key it in on the page where you click 3 "yeses".

If I get 5 phones, do I have to keep on all 5 phones and on each phone and i will get the trade-in text message for that phone ?

No but you do need to turn it on at some point to get the text message. Now can u miss a text message if the phone is not on ? is more of a technical question that I can't answer.
