A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

Is there a big difference between i3 and i5 ?
I use google to check these things out.

For example you type "i3-12010 vs. i5-11200" and check the results. Just make sure the websites that you choose are discussing the cpu that you need (sometimes other cpus pop up instead).

Not for office work. More of a difference between 8GB and 16GB RAM.
The first gets you better battery life. Aside for that, it depends on the task. They're both good enough for office work but you may find that you need more RAM (they are upgradeable, though).
U series i3 have 2 regular cores and 4 low-powered cores, and i5s have 2 more low powered cores. I would say it is a waste of money unless you play casual video games (there is a small bump in graphics processing power).
Ryzen 3s have four regular cores, 5s have six (EXCEPT the 7520U, which should be considered a Ryzen 3), 7s have eight. Even though the 3 is plenty, I would consider it worth a small bump in price to get more cores.
So it seems that the first one (ryzen) is better in everything. (although just by a bit)

Uh, that’s a $30 price difference
that question was on a different one, the second link above with an i5 is $75 more, then i saw the ryzen for $30 more, so debating which one  is worth it.
seems like the olam is advising the ryzen processor https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-15-laptop/spd/inspiron-15-3525-laptop/nbnn3525glhlh?ref=variantstack

$299 for the aspire 3 with i5 seems like a good deal, but turns out its's an 11th gen i5. Screen is TN.
Better off with one of the plastic dells, which also don't require circle membership.

If you are tempted to buy the Zenbook at Best Buy with the Core Ultra 5 for $550, don't.
You'll regret getting a computer with 8GB non-upgradeable RAM.

#1: Correct. Benchmark is not everything.
#2: They don't always have every CPU. I find this happens with the newer cpu's.

Need a 13 or 14 inch, lightweight, touch screen laptop, mainly for family use (nothing heavy duty), and from Dell due to BP credits.
XPS 13 with the upgrade to 16gb seems like best option.
Any experience or alternative recommondations?

The upgrade to the "plus" with touchscreen and the newer i7 for $200 more seems logical too, if you like touch. for the cpu itself, not worth it, though the 13th gen i believe gets better battery, and the battery itself is slightly larger as well.

How does that one compare to this

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/laptops/inspiron-laptops/spd/inspiron-16-5635-laptop/usichbts5635fyxc
One simply does not buy a laptop with 8gb soldered ram anymore (unless like really cheap).

The $600 version with 16gb ram and 1tb ssd is nice. the specs don't mention metal, but the reviews do. But I wouldn't spend that much on a 250nit screen anymore.

It's probably worth $150 over the plastic 15 inch, assuming the reviews are correct.

If you arent using up amex credits, you'd need to compare it to
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1772712-REG/lenovo_82xf0065us_16_ideapad_slim_5i.html
One day sale - Lenovo Ideapad 5i 16", i5-13th, 16GB RAM (soldered) and 512GB SSD, $399 at B&H.
Metal build. Excellent price. Support Yidden.
currently $460
has numberpad, which dell (bizzarely imho) does not include. Almost equivalent cpu. smaller ssd. birghter screen.

5000 series Dells are metal (until further notice). Link says 5635, that's how you know. (Agav, same for the "5" series at Lenovo.)

Pay close attention to the details of any sale. Take, for example, the Galaxy Book4 on sale for $700 at Best Buy (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-galaxy-book4-15-6-fhd-laptop-intel-core-7-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-silver/6572184.p?skuId=6572184):
1. It is not the Book4 PRO, which is much lighter and built much better, plus usually has an AMOLED screen, not the boring 1080p one this has.
2. It has an Intel Core 7, not an Intel Core Ultra 7. The Core 7 is the equivalent of a 2x refresh of the 12th gen U series, has only 2 P-cores and 8 E-cores. The Core Ultra 7 uses a higher level of wattage, and even if it did not, the most common model (155H) has 6 P-cores and 10 E-cores. It is therefore on a different planet of performance. I need to do a quick refresh on common processors in the market for the oilom. Maybe after Pesach?

This is an okay computer but the price is somewhat boring, not exciting at all.

Lenovo Thinkpad X13 with Ryzen 7 6850U (Zen 3+ and very good integrated graphics) for $850 at Woot.
Great price for someone who wants a tiny computer built extremely well, decent battery life yet very light. Note: Only a single USB 4.0 port (Type-C, kamuvan), HDMI and headphone jack. The need for a dongle kind of kills the portability...

https://computers.woot.com/offers/thinkpad-x13-amd-g3-amd-ryzen-7-laptop?ref=w_cnt_wp_0_8

Don't get any of the other computers listed (Lenovo or HP).

Dell - Inspiron plastic 15 with i5-1235U and 16GB of RAM for $380. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-15-laptop/spd/inspiron-15-3520-laptop/nn3520gsbbs?ref=variantstack
And if you aren't bound to Dell, this is a better buy for $360 - Ryzen 7 5700U (Zen 3), 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-Aspire-3-15-6-Full-HD-Display-AMD-Ryzen-7-5700U-Octa-Core-Mobile-Processor-Radeon-Graphics-16GB-DDR4-512GB-PCIe-Gen4-SSD-Windows-11-Home/5262667268?

Better if you can splurge on this, as @Chuchum Ainer said, for $460.
