A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

$350 is a decent price for this, if you don't mind the 2-in-1. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-pavilion-2-in-1-14-fhd-laptop-intel-core-i3-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-space-blue/6502263.p?skuId=6502263
You'll get similar performance from this 15.6" model but you would not be able to upgrade the RAM. $380.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-aspire-3-laptop-15-6-full-hd-ips-amd-ryzen-5-7520u-8gb-lpddr5-512gb-nvme-ssd-steam-blue/6530235.p?skuId=6530235

There's also this 13th gen i3, not 2-in-1, but still touchscreen for $350
https://www.staples.com/lenovo-ideapad-slim-3-15iru8-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i3-1315u-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-windows-11-82x7001vus/product_24559657

The listing isn't clear about the touchscreen, but it's in the specs. I saw this one in on display in store, and the screen was touch.

They also have this 12th gen i3 non-touch for $330
https://www.staples.com/asus-vivobook-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i3-1215u-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-windows-11-home-quiet-blue-f1504za-sb34/product_24559897

The price is okay (not too bad, not too great), but that model has terrible battery life.
A Macbook would work, but there are other options if you don't like the Apple ecosystem.
If you are saying you want decent portability and battery life, I can find you something. I was waiting for your answer.

EDIT: Don't get an M2 Macbook with only 8GB RAM. You'll regret it.

Hey. I really appreciate your responses and due diligence.
I never used Apple. Personally I don't like the fact they only use plugs, cords, outlets or whatever that requires only apple. It can make it hard to find another cord if I need one. (As opposed to other companies that share the same cords.)

Although, if Apple is a better machine for what I need, then I might be willing to try it out. Do you think I should go for a MAC, or since I am already willing to pay the price of a MAC, I could find better machines for that amount of money? TIA.

If price isn't a factor definitely go the apple / final cut pro route. A windows laptop will be cheaper and a better bang for your buck and the software options are generally cheaper.

@Miracle Something like this would be awesome.
$800 at Best Buy - ASUS TUF A16 with Ryzen 7 7735HS (Zen 3, 8 core, 35W) and Radeon 7600S (8GB). 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. Reviewer claims 11.5 hours of video playback. A different reviewer got 12 hours internet browsing and 20 hours idle.

May I ask why you think this is the best option (over the mac?)
Also, does Best buy still give student discounts?

looking for help finding a laptop  ;D

Things that are important to me:

1) FAST, really important that there is the least loading time as possible, and wont slow down after a year.

2) Portable, probably want a 14"(but i'm open to other sizes) and weight is Definitely a factor.

3) Mostly using just for browsing, but often have many tabs open at once.

*4) have quite a few dell credits so i am willing to pay a premium if its sold by dell

i guess im looking to pay in the ~$800 range but not firm Especially if it's a good bang for my buck

Over the Mac, the primary difference is upgradeability and several hundred dollars. If you get an M2 with 16GB of RAM it might even be double (or close to double). However, such a Mac would (probably) be a better computer.

looking for help finding a laptop  ;D
...
So you want a premium thin and light laptop. I define this as under 4 lbs for 15" or bigger, 3lbs for 14", and excellent battery life and build quality. I'm in a good mood today and it's been a while since I looked for these so I trawled for you.
Sorted by price but if you like 14" you'll have to look between the lines. Also, even though you didn't mention battery life, all of these have lots of it (sorry).
Links below in the same order.
1. $650 - HP Elitebook 16" 865 Gen 9, Ryzen 5 Pro 6650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3.9lbs, manufacturer says 17.25 hours (yeah, right). Elitebooks are HP's Thinkpad/Latitude competitors. Everything is upgradeable. This is a stupendous buy right now.
2. $740 - Lenovo X1 Nano Gen 1, i5-1130G7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 1.99lbs. This is built extremely well, tiny, light, and gets 13+ hours on Mobilemark. Search upthread for the last time I commented on this one. It is old but sufficient and great value for something built so well and so portable.
3. $800 - Acer Swift Go 14", i5-1335U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2.87lbs, manufacturer says 10.5 hours. This is a bit overpriced IMHO but seems to be what you need to pay for modern specs, build, battery and 14" right now.
4. $800 - LG Gram 15.6", i5-1240P, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2.54lbs and decent but not stupendous battery life. Some buyers have said they don't like the feel of LG's build materials (feels plastic-y), but whatever they did, it drops the weight to a ridiculous level considering the size. See next entry.
5. $850 - LG UltraPC 16", Ryzen 5 7530U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. Trades a pound of weight for much better battery life and $50, and slightly larger screen.
6. $850 AT DELL - XPS 13, i5-1230U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. 2.6lbs, 14 hours video playback. Nothing is upgradeable. i7 version for $50, not worth it IMHO because it has the same core count but it's your money.

I forgot to mention two important points; I need super good wifi connection as I don't have internet at home but my neighbor lets me piggyback his.
Also, I noticed it didn't have an SD card slot... I save all my work on the SD card.

First of all work off of a SSD (internal or external), then backup ideally 3x at two locations some count online as one.
