I find that these kind of photos (and even more so the videos) really highlight the devastating impact of war on so many lives- families torn apart, kids and spouses traumatized, and nobody knowing what the future holds. The look on these people's faces is enough to bring one to tears.

In a strange way the pictures of devastation, destruction and death somehow don't capture it the same way as seeing someone who's alive but in such an uncertain state, and who might have to live with the impact of this war for the rest of their life.

and therefore??? since Russia knows that, the world should stand by and watch the brutal killings of innocent civilians at the the hands of one madman?  I know Ukraine is a separate entity but saving civilians from a barbaric unjustified invasion knows no bright lines.

When was the last time you were outraged or devastated by the atrocities in Syria or Yemen or Somalia or Sudan or one of the various other war torn regions in the world where civilians are literally starving to death or are enduring horrific abuses and bodily dangers? Are you getting worked up about this more than those just because that's what the mainstream media is covering and public sentiment cares about today?

As with this forum and life in general you connect more to certain things.

There's a reason that emotional is generally used as an antonym of rational.

But seriously, the reason that we connect more to certain things (well, the real reason is because it's presented to us in a way to get us to develop a certain perspective and mindset and to jump into the bandwagon ourselves, but let's ignore that) is because we feel that it's more of a part of our territory and common culture than others. Europe feels a lot closer to home than sub Saharan Africa. The poster was explaining why from a practical perspective, Estonia is realistically much more connected to us than Ukraine is. Were there to be an argument than the West and America should be the global policeman at preventing human rights abuses no matter the personal cost, as opposed to taking an isolationist stance, there should be no difference between Ukraine or Afghanistan or Somalia or Chad.

Yup. And over here, the personal costs of intervention seem to outweigh the altruistic push to intervene. The world seems to be intervening at a pretty close to maximum level without stepping over the line that would necessitate a personal response.

yes we should care for all; brutal unjustified killing of innocent civilians should boil all of our blood!
maybe this takes more of a limelight because its actually a madman invading another sovereign country and what it means to neighboring countries.  Also this smacks more of 1939 when another country invaded neighboring countries rather than ethnic cleansings; but yes in principal I think the world has a duty to protect innocent civilians although not always practical.  To not care is just not human.

Listen, if I had a family member held hostage by a terrorist group, trust me, I would not be singing the "Never negotiate with terrorists" tune. That doesn't mean that prisoner swaps and releasing dangerous criminals is the right thing to do. Again, it would be an emotional response.
