new rules for how you can earn AA miles

Starting with tickets issued on May 1, 2024, the only flights that earn AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points are those booked directly with American, eligible oneworld® and partner airlines, and preferred travel agencies.

I knew this was coming. It's very annoying in the hotel world and going to be worse in the airline world.

Whether this is a nothingburger or a tectonic annoyance will depend on how broadly "preferred travel agencies" is defined.

but seems like basic economy tickets need to be direactly through an airline to earn miles

Basic Economy fare tickets will only earn when booked directly with American and our eligible partner airlines.

Who earns miles through flights nowadays?

Looks like they are shifting it heavily towards a CC loyalty program.

They also announced changes to business Credit Cards, where loyalty points will got to named cardmember, but miles will be credited to business. I wonder if there will be any tax implications.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!
