I'm B"H planning to go with my wife in the next few weeks, I have a couple of questions
1) It looks like Antigua & Lake Atitlan are the places to check out (Flores & semuc Champay are just too far) so what the optimal amount of time to spend in each place? I can prob do either Sun - Thurs or Sun - Sun
2) At Lake Atitlan Is it realistic to stay in San Marcos/Santa Crus or even in Pana & hop over the lake to San Pedro to eat
3) Indian's Nose in Lake Atitlan or Pacaya Hike from Antigua?
4) As everything seems to be in cash, what's the optimal amount of cash to carry around, how often do people need an ATM
5) Do people book the different tours in Antigua through Chabad or on their own.
Thanks to @Yaalili & @ponash123 for the great wiki & fantastic Trip Reports
@mendyt we need that TR asap
Sorry I haven't gotten to it, since it does take time 😊
1. I would say Sunday to Thursday is perfect, but having a Shabbos can be a very nice experience. If you are choosing to stay for Shabbos, I would stay in Antigua.
2. I didn't do Indian nose, because we didn't base our trip around hiking and after doing Acatenango, we had enough of nice views, and rather wanted to explore more towns.
Acatenango is tough, but you can go with a jeep most of the way, and hike for only about 45 min.
3. San Marcos is a very peaceful place to stay, if you are into Yoga, mediation and these type of healing, then you will definitely enjoy the vibe and energy of the town, we were a group of 7 people so we had our boat driver all the time.
It can take a lot of time traveling with the public boat from San Marcos to San Pedro, I therefore dont think its realistic to plan a stay in San Marcos and rely in food from San Pedro, Just bring along food! IME the food in San Pedro was nothing special at all, we only ate one dinner there.
4. Amount of cash all depends on what you are going to do, people here made it sound as if there is no ATM to be found, I wouldn't totally disagree, it is definitely not so convenient as in the US, but we found more than one working ATM and we all took out more cash during the trip. Plan wisely, have a decent amount, but if you will need more, you will definitely be able to find an ATM at some point
5. Chabad of Antigua is very helpful and they can help you with everything, that whole Chabad house is geared for tourists and Israeli backpackers
