I found an English siddur and saw this.

Interestingly the targum says 1/2 an amma between each. So I'm not sure where the amma comes from.

megilla 2:16 Esther was taken to Achashverosh - to his house - in the seventh year in teves.
But maybe that was when she was taken to the palace to start her preparations which lasted a year.

Since it's an isosceles (sides are same length) right triangle, the length (i.e. "scale") of the sides directly affect the length of the hypotenuse. It's just a shortcut for (the reverse of) Pythagoras since the sides are equal.
