Shabbos in Manhattan
« on: August 01, 2016, 02:33:54 PM »
All -

It was hard to believe that this does not exist, but I searched for a while and couldn't find it. Please merge if this thread already exists.

We are looking to do an impromptu end of summer road trip and thinking about NYC. Traveling with 5 kids (ages 1.5 - 9), so 7 of us. NYC came up as a great place to spend Shabbos since it would be fun for the kids (Central Park, skyscrapers, other walking tourist sites). Plus a large eruv as the younger kids are not quite strong walkers yet.

Problem is finding a place to stay. What are the best options on points. We don't mind 'roughing it' (two beds), but would really prefer a suite. Realize that would need to 'sneak' kids past front desk. Also would strongly prefer to book using points. AirBNB doesn't have anything remotely affordable. Eruv is a must.

Any suggestions from the group?

PS - if Manhattan absolutely does not work, any other suggestions of spending a nice shabbos in the NYC area?

You might be better off staying in Brooklyn. Easy access to minyanim and cheap food options.  Just a train ride (also an adventure) away from Manhattan.

Carlton on Madison on 29th and Madison is part of Marriot (other hotels in area too) and Adereth El is nearby and they have a really great kiddush that you can eat lunch at. There's also Madison Square Park a couple of blocks away

I did this about 18 months ago - winter 2014. I stayed in the Millenium Times Sq (nothing special to write home about). From memory, my room was on the 16th floor and the staff were more than happy to open up the doors for the staircases to let me up. I davened at The Fifth Avenue Synagogue Friday night which was nice and the rest at Chabad of midtown which was where we ate. Meals were good (from memory) and communal style so they put you with other people on your table, though I think if you're there with a bunch of kids you would have your own.

Can't help you in terms of eruv / kid friendly places to stay though.

Did you try the Heights (Manhattan also)
You are always welcome to Queens for Shabbos.  Brooklyn has no Eruv, at least not an eruv that people hold by.

If eruv is a must, Monsey is close by.

Excuse me?!?
I'm going to guess that mgoldhammer18 is from Flatbush. Do you know that Brooklyn is a county with 10s or maybe even 100s of neighborhoods?
I was once in an office building in downtown Brooklyn when a guy from Flatbush stopped me and asked me if I was going to Brooklyn and could offer him a ride.

ETA: Apparently he's from Queens but my point still stands.
ye. that one made me lol

Brooklyn is a borough. The county is Kings.
There are 10+ Frum neighborhoods, most with eruvim, and most if not all eruvim are contested. I think none of them are connected. AYLOR. You may even be approached in some of them.

Most of Brooklyn neighborhoods would be considered ultra orthodox / chasidish, although that might be the attraction itself.....
Although walking distance, neighborhoods can be an hour walk from one another & even end to end

I've never been in Brooklyn county. Where is that?
Borough of Brooklyn shares borders with Kings County.
So, yes, the definition of Brooklyn would be the same the definition of a specific county.
