How should I book nyc-lax on virgin? Should I transfer MR to Virgin Atlantic or Virgin America? And can I book online?

Yes, and no close in booking fee.
It would be more than 10k MR though.

Right
SQ is 11k I think and that's MR- don't know about taxes and fees though

I could be wrong but I don't think there is any better way than Aeroplan

If you're looking for no YQ, use UA. But the miles required goes way up.

Do the math of how many extra miles on UA vs. how much YQ is on AC to see what's more worth it for you.
Agree. thanks guys.

That means you need 8 Delta or virgin America saver seats.Seriously....
Just to be pedantic, you can use VA, it's 6.9k for Delta shorthaul

thank you much appreciated
but not sure you want to use the word pedantic here; some say it has a negative connotation

Never xfer mr to vx for use on vx, bad value, xfer to vs for use on vx after confirming availability.
How can I search virgin availability ?
Assuming you're flying vx you need to call vs to have them search, no way to do it online. They can put it on hold and then you transfer in the points (which happens instantly)

Ib/ba via mad or bcn is probably cheapest.
Or AF possibly.
No airline on that route will have a special seat for J class AFAIK

Looking for NYC-BKK in F 8/21-~8/31. EY or EK preferred. Don't know much about this route, but it looks like EK can no longer be booked with AS miles?

Vce-fco?
take the train ;)
other then that, probably cash not miles.
If you need to use miles then FB probably.
there is only one airline that flies that route nonstop.

yeah, train and flight prices are similar and fb rates for that route don't really compete with the prices I'm getting, thanks
