Did they give any explanation as the why they are withdrawing the EUA request for this one?

No idea, but considering it’s dated 07/21/2021, it has nothing to do with Omicron

ETA:

CDC first introduced this assay for detection of SARS-CoV-2 in February 2020. Now, however, the agency has decided to voluntarily withdraw its request for EUA primarily because “hundreds of SARS-CoV-2 [polymerase chain reaction (PCR)] tests have received EUAs and are widely available,” said AACC President Stephen R. Master, MD, PhD, FAACC. This means that “CDC’s test is no longer needed to fill an unmet testing need.”

They now have PCR tests that can multiplex and test for flu and covid simultaneously.

Did you also get the whatsapp message (forwarded multiple times) claiming that the CDC admitted that the COVID PCR test is inaccurate and can't tell the difference between flu and COVID, with a link to this CDC announcement?

Both articles posted (the OP link and aacc.org I quoted above) write that CDC recommends labs use the multiplex COVID/flu PCR that can test for both, the WhatsApp is just anti-vaxxers spinning that.

I recently did a single PCR test that literally tested for 23 different viruses including COVID, flu A/B, and many others. Turns out I had Coronavirus OC43, aka common cold. The results gave me confidence about the accuracy, but I didn't get results for like 3 days.

However the typical system of testing multiple times for flu and COVID is such a drain on resources and creates a unnecessarily huge backlog for testing during outbreaks.

Sounds like a respiratory panel, if that’s what it is they’re extremely pricey (~$1,500) and doctors won’t always order it because insurance might balk.

Not sure it costs that much. 3 weeks later only claim my PCP submitted is $160 for the visit.

Yes, but they use news to develop and “support” those lies, hence: spin

Are they saying that since there are many commercially available test, it is no longer the CDC's job to provide a test?

I had one swab earlier this week and they tested for Corona and flu a and b. Does this mean they were using the new test already, or can they test one swab multiple times?

They do not need to use emergency use to expedite.

With the people I know, it's not lying per se, it's reading something and misunderstanding it because of their preconceptions.

Aren't all the others also still under a EUA?

Yes and they are already approved while that one is not yet approved.

IOW, all EUAs (COVID related anyway) are due to an emergency, and multiple tests/treatments/vaccines are EUA-approved only because there’s a pandemic that creates demand beyond what’s already available (so even if 50 tests are approved, a 51st is deemed “needed”).

The FDA isn’t making a decision here, it’s the CDC (that has other priorities to focus on) that’s withdrawing their request for EUA approval, perhaps to focus on other things.
