Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

about the points if you are buyng to keep/wear but then return why would it be wrong to keep the earned points?
I don't think it is... That's why I asked the 1st question 1st.

Here's the real kicker.... In order to make a 70k bonus on my ink card I bought a 5,000 breitling watch online and returned it in store... I didn't feel too good about that.... Probably won't do that again too quickly. I have a Barclay card coming... Gnna prob do the GC method
I feeling like buying and returning something without using it to meet a minimum spend is more ethically sound than buying something to use and then returning it when you don't want it anymore.

NEWS FLASH: If something is more ethical than something else that means they are both unethical.

i'm not getting involved in the ethical part of it but one thing it's not is taus akum you are definitely fooling them
i think once you do something that will cause the taus you lose that argument. was mentioned earlier about target not scanning an item, pashtus you cant hide it and then say "well he should've checked better" again, I dont thing this an issue at all, but if you're relying on taus akum i dont believe that is correct
Ok I was just playing that side of it. I do PGGM etc not because of Taus Akum, I do it for the reason explained a few posts up. Just seeing what you thought about TA for PGGM etc.

If you want to discuss what your Priest, Rabbi or any other religious leader told you then start a new thread. This is about ethics. If you can’t take responsibility for your actions and want to blame someone else you have bigger problems than ethics.
Except that, at least in Judaism, there are often multiple correct answers to an issue, and we are told to find a spiritual leader who we trust (in their knowledge) and go to them for answers when we are unsure ourselves. I believe that my Rabbi considers the ethical aspects of my questions, and not just the straight up law, when he answers me. I am not putting the responsibility on him, I don't think there's any responsibility at all since I believe these actions are completely allowed and not bordering on the ethical scale.

perhaps, but the whole discussion of ethics is grey area, and is ultimately up to the individual to apply. someone may prefer to be less unethical even if he engages in some unethical behaviors.

I fully agree with CM. If in your heart and mind, you know/think/suspect that it's wrong, it's wrong. Regardless of whether you can convince some unsuspecting Rabbi/Priest/Imam otherwise.

Reminds of a friend who's family wouldn't use Heinz ketchup because the hechsher wasn't good enough, they didn't use OU. Yet when they ate in Kosher Delight obm, they would eat the Heinz ketchup since KD had a "heimishe hechser", so the Rav Hamachsir was taking responsibility for their gehenom. Ain't that convoluted?

If that is the case then maybe we should have a scale 1-10?

some people have skewed hashkafas based on who they have to impress and what they want to say they do
they wouldnt eat OU and im sure they werent makpid (albeit unintentionally) on 100 other halachos that matter more than not holding of the OU

I believe this whole thread is pretty silly starting with the name. "Is it ethical?" implies that there's some kind of objective definition of what is ethical and what isn't while the whole notion of ethics is what subjectively "feels" right (or wrong) which changes from person to person and from society to society.

I think the name should be changed to "Do you find it ethical?"

If I got 3 CT shirts, and after wearing one a couple of times, I think it's about 90-95% likely that I'll exchange all 3 for a different style (thicker material).

The other two shirts are still in their packaging. Is it ethical to wear all of them for a few months before returning them?

Bump...CUrious to hear opinions - since when I got the shirts, I WAS planning on wearing them, it's just that now I'm probably going to return them.

once you decide you are returning it, it is wrong to wear them
just like once a guy decides to divorce his wife, he cant live with her

If plan on returning them I would not now wear the other two.
