When he asks why you gave a no to a question that sometimes has a yes, you'll be able to simply explain that the available answers were either yes or no and you thought that "no" was closer to the general answer because ....

Firstly if I was going that route I would say" yes". It is much closer.
Secondly, this is a nice tactic for someone asking in good faith. Otherwise it's a "gotcha" moment and any attempts at explanation would be shrilly labeled as digging out of a hole throwing my religion under the bus eating pretzels and being a fish.

So back to my question. The Old Testament discusses feticide and proscribed a financial penalty. This being in sharp contrast to the death penalty for homicide. Do they explain why that is? My assumption is because in the feticide case it’s unintentional, just want to confirm that’s how they understand it.

Where did "feticide" come from?
Let me make this clear. The Catholic Church considers abortion murder, FULL STOP!!! No exceptions and no pretzels!!!
How one religion interprets their scriptures is up to them.
A classic example would be the Messiah.

I know what their position is. I’m asking how they interpret their scriptures. Specifically the verses that speak about a man hitting a woman and causing her to miscarry.

Catholics do not spend their lives studying the scripture. You are asking about Catholic theology. That is a discussion you should have with a Catholic theologian which I am not.
