I wonder if the field of potential owners can be narrowed down using some Sherlock Holmes skills. For example, large battim would imply Chabad, direction of strap differentiates between Ashkenaz/Sefard, etc. Are there any other distinctions that vary based on demographic? Maybe for a wiki?

It will not be specific enough.
You can pin it down to a specific type of Jew, but this Jew can be found pretty much anywhere.

Indeed, but they place of advertising the tefillin would vary. For large battim, you would do Chabad media. For Chassidish, maybe Kol Ha'olam. For modern Orthodox or not-so-yeshivish, social media. For Lakewood Yeshivish, a sign in BMG.

But that is probably not the focus of this thread, so I'll refrain from hijacking it.

My point is: If the battim are XXL, you need to contact Chabad everywhere, so you skip Antartica.
Regular sized + double paired and/or checking the shape of the letter Shin on the Shel Rosh, we are looking for a chosid (not chabad), so we still need to look pretty much everywhere.

Practically speaking, if someone is looking for his Tfillin, he should follow the last posts of this topic.

yes exactly He was the first one I contacted.  but still no bites...
It was so weird, finding them unwrapped on the floor of the jetbridge, while getting off the plane.  Right by the door where they would bring strollers and gate checked bags through.

But they weren't there from our flight, must have been a previous flight from that gate...
