In practice, you're wrong. Somehow, haircuts got thrown into the tipping culture mess early on, and a tip is now the standard. The generally accepted amount is between 15-25% of the set price.
K
25%, I think that's a lot. It's not a restaurant.

For full time employees I'm with Mr Pink.
Owners, it depends on how successful I think their business is and how much is charged. (The going rate in Lakewood is ~$25. There's no way I'm giving a tip on top of that)
Shairecroppers, the people I've seen doing it here in Lakewood don't seem to be doing it for a living rather as a side thing. So I tend to not tip

Ummm.......  :o :o :o

That is crazy! I get a great deal from a friend for $10. Never realized just how great it is. $47 + a tip sounds like highway robbery!!

Say what?

If that was the price I'd go back to what I did as a bochur, and give myself my own haircuts.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

My kids i pay $25 each and throw in an extra $5 tip if im taking 2 hair cuts.

For myself i pay $40 and i usually. Add an extra $2-$3.

Both barbers are the owner. Like someone mentioned i tip for the service.

Pretty sure 50-60 shekel is standard for machine cut and beard trim (what I get for the last ten years) in Y-m. I tip ten shekel every other or third haircut, twenty before YT (but I have to fight him to take it).

Isn't there a barber in mikvah doing haircuts like in all chassidish places?

To me it sounds like a lot for cutting hair... Do you personally think it's a lot, or it's just the price you have to pay. Also, how often do you get haircuts?

Not applicable if it's a one man shop.

Though when I think about it, when I use my neighbor across the street I usually do tip him.
best is when the owner (a real pro) was doing for 12, and his amateur son now took him over for 20...

Lakewood is mostly approaching $25 for a 8-10 minute haircut. Not sure when barber went from $5 a haircut to $150 an hour. There must be a good reason why more people aren’t joining the profession and cashing in at over $100 an hour and potentially off the books to boot.

At some point in this thread, we have to define what a haircut means.

Buzz cut, $10 makes sense.

Scissor cut with styling, shampoo, etc doesn't make sense at $10.

Anything without the beard should be $10 ;)

Their costs skyrocketed when they moved out of basements to storefronts

In my barber shop it's one price fits all. What do you hold regarding someone who has a very easy haircut and really should only be paying $10, and pays a lot more, tip or no tip?

You can only find that price in a bochurs dorm...

In ch, the 5 min buzz cut costs at least $15 these days...
