Shabbat in Amsterdam was really nice. We ate at Chabad and walked around. The city itself is beautiful.

I have never been to Antwerp for Shabbat.

For Shabbos, and perhaps the week too, I am struggling between staying in the following areas:

1) Stay near the Portuguese Synagogue, which is where I want to daven on Shabbos, but that's far away from the kosher food and the Chabad house for Shabbos meals.
2) Stay near the Chabad house but it's far from the kosher food areas.
3) Stay in the South in the kosher food areas (e.g., Holiday Inn Express South) but miss out on davening at the  Portuguese Synagogue and the Chabad Shabbos meals.

Thoughts?

Its not a far walk from the Portuguese Synagogue to Chabad.

We stayed at the Hyatt which was in between Chabad and the Portuguese Synagogue. For shabbat morning, we davened at the Gerard Dou shul which was a really beautiful shul that survived the Nazis because it is so non de-script on the outside. It was a beautiful experience too.

If you stay in the south, it means you need to go to town every day that you want to do things in Amsterdam itself. Either way, you'll have to commute - to restaurants or to museums and activities.

Interesting. Did you daven Friday night at the Portuguese shul? Where did you eat the Shabbos meals?

We davened with Chabad and ate there both Friday night and shabbos day. Chabad doesn't have services for shacharis. You could very easily daven at the Portugeuse shul for shacharis and walk to Chabad. It really isn't that far. The hardest part is not carrying a map, but there aren't too many turns.

+1 that's what I did.

The Portuguese shul has a nice pareve kiddush after davening shabbos day.
They also give free tours with a guide on shabbos.

Chabad lunch was only at like 1:30pm or so.
It's about a 25 min walk from the Portuguese shul to chabad.

You can walk from Chabad to Portuguese in the eruv but it would be a less direct route.

My bathroom in the Andaz had Spinoza wallpaper. Led to me being able to joke that the only place you're allowed to learn Spinoza is in the bathroom.

We are going to Amsterdam for 3 days in July, arriving 9AM on Monday, leaving 2:30PM Thursday. We plan on going straight to the gardens as Dan did, made reservations at Anne Frank museum for Wednesday,  but am curious about purchasing a 3 day travel pass which includes entrance to museums, canal ride and unlimited public transportation. Would you do that? We are 4 adults.
