25 Seforim for $100 Donation!
« on: August 28, 2013, 10:18:51 PM »
From an email I received:

שלום וברכה
Please help me add more Seforim to HebrewBooks.org

For Each donation of $100, I will send you a box of 25 FREE Seforim!
These are Seforim that we have scanned over the past few years. They were written by Mechabrim from all over the world and were mostly published within the past 10-20 years. This offer is available while supplies last.

Disclaimer:
MANY of these Seforim are NOT Benimzta. Of course, you may not need this "hard copy" because a digital version is already on HebrewBooks.org. Unfortunately, I cant choose which ones to send you. I will randomly send increments of 25. Worst case scenario, you can give some of them to others as a gift. Due to cost of shipping, I can ONLY Ship these Seforim to a US address.

Please feel free to email me with any questions. Also, any amount helps!
Please click on the link below to donate.
http://data.hebrewbooks.org/donate/donate.html

As we improve the site, we could use ANY amount you can donate. Even as little as $1 will help us continue to improve the site.
You can donate by clicking the link above, or you can email me with your telephone number and I can take your information over the phone.

You can use a credit card or a check!
If you prefer, you can mail a check to :

The Society for the Preservation of HebrewBooks
1472 President Street
Brooklyn NY 1213

If you have any questions, please email me.

Thank you so much for helping me continue to spread Torah!

Chaim

Although it is a wonderful idea, I could go to the Capitol and get sefarim (that I can choose) that are b'nimztah for the same price, or better.

If you use the site, it's a great way to show your appreciation while possibly getting some interesting seforim in return.

If it was just scanned digitally and never read/studied by a human, does it need gniza?

I'm not sure when the exception is/isn't applicable, but there seems to be one for (some?) printed materials that were never used. I'm unfortunately not learned enough to cite a source.

There might be some meikilim but most Poskim hold that they do require Gniza. There's an org in Israel dedicated to making sure printers don't just throw it out, you can see their logo in some seforim behind the Sha'ar Blatt.

Don't wanna start a new thread, but I just received another email from HebrewBooks.
They updated the site with new features like bookkeeping, search history, easier to access seforim. Just visit beta.Hebrewbooks.org and login to use the new features.

On first look, it looks great!

ETA: Here's the email

Shalom, Would you like to try a new and improved HebrewBooks.org experience?
Please go to: beta.hebrewbooks.org and begin using our "beta" site.

If you login using your gmail account, you will be able to use "My Hebrew Books"    ה"ב שלי   which will remember your search history, allow you to book mark and more.

Please email me after you have had a chance to use beta.hebrewbooks.org and let me know your thoughts and how we can continue to improve.

Thank you
Chaim

That only applies if it's not bound into a sefer (ie the Yated or a pamphlet put out in shul). Once something is bound into a sefer it needs geniza even if never learned from.
An interesting point is that on an unbound torah page, once learned from it needs geniza but only the actual part of the page that has divrei torah are now 'holy'. You can rip off the corner of a page, write a phone number on it and later throw it out.

On a bound sefer however, every part of the sefer needs geniza including cover, corners that fall off etc. even without words on them.

Sounds strange; reasoning? source?

I don't remember the source but saw it in a sefer about Shaimos as well as from discussion with a Rav.

The basic logic is that a sefer is permanent in nature and was created to be a sefer - hence the kedusha even if not learned from yet and even the cover etc.
A devar torah in the Yated was never meant to be permanent and is like a photocopy of a sefer etc - if learned from it achieves kedusha status - but even then it's more 'disposable' then a sefer and only the actual words need sheimos not the whole yated/corners of page.
