Recently I've been getting loads of PMs asking me about information that is already on the forums, or a clarification about something I posted. I feel like my PM box should be used for personal messages, and any questions about forum stuff should be posted on the forums. This is beneficial for the greater DDF community so that anyone who sees the posted question can answer it and any answers (mine or someone elses) can be seen by everyone as well. Do you agree?

I'd like to put something in my signature that would discourage people from sending me such PMs, but at the same time I want to be cordial in conveying this message, so I don't offend anyone's sensibilities... I'm sincerely HTH (Here To Help), and I'm eager to share with the community, but it's hard to manage a PM inbox with dozens of messages piling on each week. How do you suggest I phrase my signature? (or am I going about this the wrong way?)

Or maybe...

We really need a n00b search guide. I bet many are searching from the searchbox within a thread, and when they don't find other threads with the info they are looking for, they post asking an obvious question.
By all means, anyone can write up a n00b guide to the forums if they would like to help out.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Better?
Yup
(I can only imagine the newbie reading your sig. and thinking "yea sure, then how else did her get so many posts?" ;D).

Personally, I think that might be a big turnoff if they can't start new threads.

How about anyone wanting to start a new thread would send the topic/post to a group of mods or reputable members and one of them would ‘approve’ it and post it.
After a while a person could get a certain status that allows him to start threads with out this approval

Does that make any sense?

How about not approving a new topic title unless they search that title first?

Is there a way to restrict noobs (null x posts) from starting threads, and have a noob thread in GenDis, and they can ask their questions there

I'm all for this.

A slight barrier of entry might actually be a good thing, it'll discourage trolls/mooches. Call it Darwinian moderating if you wish ;)

How about not approving a new topic title unless they search that title first?

Typical n00b title: "Can you help me", you want to require searching that? :P

  • Location: The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.
  • Programs: 1. Search on google. 2. Search in the right board of DDF with a general word or two. 3. Read the wiki. 4. Read the thread. 5. Ask away.

Hmm...I used to have a similar message as my signature.
Definitely agree with your sentiments though...it's getting out of hand.
@Dan do you really receive exactly 67 PM's every week?

How about adding to your signature "Alexsei ≠ Bal Shem Tov's wagon driver"

How about Alexsei = Bal Shem Tov's wagon driver?

And how did you pull up a thread from 5.5 million minutes ago?
