Facts
The flu vaccine causes more deaths per year than chicken pox.
The direct injection of RSV immunoglobulin, commonly known as the "RSV vaccine" would prevent 16x more deaths than the flu vaccine does, but is too expensive.
There is a vaccine for the plague, and that is why it is no longer an epidemic.
Ebola is caused by vaccines.
There is a vaccine for autism, but it causes mumps.

Opinions
Vaccines do not contain thimerosal, a known toxin.
If you snuck up on your neighbor's kid and cut open his skull, you would be arrested.  But when brain surgeons do it, and charge hundreds of thousands of dollars, it considered "medicine."
99% of vaccines do not cause autism (HT JJ1000).
Every pedi has seen healthy kids become sick physically & mentally hours after a vax (HT Baryochai)
Vaccines cause cancer, infertility, astma, adhd etc (HT Baryochai)

I'm not sure what you're issue is... Possibly the CDC could have done a better job of writing on their website how they have dispelled the myth about autism's link to vaccines.

Regardless this has been done both by showing that the original study was fraudulent and by performing studies on millions of children which have never shown a link.

If people can watch that Khan academy video or better yet look at the actual studies and still be that there is a link then a stronger letter on the CDCs website would have no impact at all on their fantasies beliefs.

I think the point here is that the CDC has to realize they aren't talking only to people who understand how the scientific method and terminology work. The anti-vax camp is very good at targeting the lay people by using scary words and legit sounding terms. The CDC has to start working on their PR to make even regular people realize the nonsense that's out there.

For example, let's talk about Rubella. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubella

Rubella is, "a relatively trivial infection."  So why the vaccine? Because it is very harmful to pregnant women.

So suppose you took your baby in to be vaccinated, and they told you "he may be very kvetchy for the next day, and if he runs a high fever you should go to the emergency room" and you remember from the last time how much the actual shot seemed to hurt.  And then they told you that the purpose of this vaccine is to protect your next door neighbor.  Would you rethink that one? A lot of people would. It was hard enough giving him the vaccines he needed for himself.

But of course it is better for society as a whole for kids to get the vaccine.

You see? They are giving you advice that is harmful to you, because it is better for society overall.  And that's why people don't trust them. And that's why educated smart people are the ones who don't vaccinate.

So you're switching to the dark side?

Not at all. This is the same position I've always taken--vaccines are good and worth it but they ARE also lying to us about how good and worth it.

Is your wife not planning on getting pregnant again? If the kid is a girl is she not planning on becoming a mother again?

Was thinking that. Are there any studies on the rates of vaccination amongst people with a college education vs. those without?

...and even if there were, that would only address the educated part, not the smart part.

Exactly, which is why I was surprised he was willing to make such a bold assertion.

That article just says that it's more common by liberal parents. Nothing about being smart and educated...
